“Stories Behind Singapore Streets” – Curator’s Walk

In this exclusive session, the curator will explain what comprises toponymics, and its breadth and depth, the importance of primary research, and the gaps in records. She will also detail how information can be lost, how new ones may emerge over time, as well as the importance of continual work. Participants are encouraged to visit the exhibition before the walk, so the curator can devote more time to answering questions relating to the exhibition content.

About the Curator
Tan Teng Teng has been researching and curating exhibitions on various facets of Singapore history for more than two decades. Her interest in toponymics was sparked by H.T. Haughton’s article, “Native Names of Streets in Singapore” (1891) that she stumbled upon in 1991, a good 100 years after the article was published.
Although historians of traditional Southeast Asian cultures rely primarily on written sources, the societies they study were intensely oral and aural. Studies of auditory history in other cultures have emphasised that in the past, sounds were experienced differently from today. For the most part, research into the history of sound has focused on music and musicology, but historians are now considering the huge variety of noises to which people were exposed, and how the interpretations and understanding of these sounds shaped human experience. This presentation considers some of the ways in which “noise” was heard in traditional societies, and the specific value given to loud noises. It goes on to consider how the arrival of new groups in places like Singapore also introduced alternative noises that became part of local soundscapes. Over time, however, and especially under European pressure, many sounds produced by humans that had once been easily incorporated into an evolving sonic environment became unacceptable as auditory values changed and as “loud” noise, particularly in public spaces, came to be regarded as a nuisance and potentially disruptive.
The story of Singapore, as it nears the end of 200 years after Raffles, can be unveiled in many ways – be it artefacts, pictorial representations, personal memoirs or cultural landscapes. This talk describes one aspect of Singapore’s cultural landscape: its street names and how they reflect Singapore’s changing landscapes and socio-cultural relationships. The study of street and place names, also known as toponymics, has become increasingly popular with public-spirited Singaporeans. This pursuit of historical and cultural information demonstrates Singapore as a maturing state and that her citizens are uncovering historical and cultural developments of their city-state.
